Eco-friendly, Water Conserving Materials

With drought being an ever-present issue here in California, our teams are adept at installing top quality artificial turf and succulents, both of which help to conserve water and maintain the clean, manicured look.

Lawn, artificial turf or a California Friendly garden?

The main decision in a Los Angeles yard is how much of it stays green, and how that green gets its water. Each choice changes the watering, the upkeep and whether the LADWP turf rebate applies:

  • Grass lawn

A soft surface for children and pets to play on, kept green with sprinklers, regular watering and mowing. LADWP and the Metropolitan Water District call it the thirsty lawn their rebates pay to replace.

  • Artificial turf

Helps conserve water and keeps the clean, manicured look of a lawn. One catch in Los Angeles: the LADWP turf rebate does not allow it. The rebate checklist says "No artificial turf is installed", and the program fact sheet says artificial or synthetic turf is not allowed.

  • California Friendly and native plants

Low-water plants, succulents and desert grasses, with mulch, rock or decomposed granite between them and drip lines at the roots. This is the garden the LADWP turf rebate pays for.

Many yards combine them: real grass or turf where children and pets play, planting beds and decomposed granite paths where they do not, and pavers where people walk and gather. If you plan to claim the rebate, ask the program about any artificial turf on the property before you plan it, and get pre-approval before anything is removed.

Our team of designers and experts can help you

Create a beautiful blueprint and then install anything and everything from sod, to artificial turf, to the most eco-friendly of all–decomposed granite (DG).  Decomposed Granite is a fantastic way to bring your front or back yard to life in a sleek, eco-friendly manner.  This abundant natural material is available in many colors, including tan, gray, brown, gold, and red. By eliminating the need for sprinkler systems, DG helps the environment and your pocket, saving you hundreds, if not thousands on your water bills.

The LADWP turf rebate: rules to know before you remove grass

Front yard in Menifee finished with gravel, a band of river rock and young succulents

If your water comes from LADWP, the City of Los Angeles utility, its turf replacement rebate pays toward replacing a lawn with a low-water garden. On LADWP's rebate page in October 2026, residential customers could get $5 per square foot ($3 from LADWP and $2 from the Metropolitan Water District) for 250 to 5,000 square feet, with a maximum of $25,000.

The amount is not guaranteed: LADWP says the program can change or end at any time without notice, and the Metropolitan Water District's fact sheet says rebates are issued first come, first served until funding runs out, one application per home per year.

  1. Pre-approval comes first

Reserve the rebate at socalwatersmart.com before any grass comes out. LADWP asks for at least five photos, the first page of your bill, measurements and your landscape plan. Areas where the lawn is already gone do not qualify.

  2. Six months to build

After pre-approval the project has to be finished within six months. LADWP names October to March as the best planting time, when cooler weather helps roots take hold.

  3. The finished yard must pass a checklist

At least 3 plants per 100 square feet, a 3 inch deep ring of mulch around every plant, no bare soil (mulch, rock or decomposed granite covers it), sprinklers capped, removed or converted to drip, a rain capture feature such as a rain garden, dry river bed or rain barrel, and no artificial turf or invasive plants.

  4. Claim it and keep it

Submit photos of the finished yard. The project is reviewed and may be inspected before the rebate is issued, and the converted area has to stay within the rules for 5 years.

Not an LADWP customer? The Metropolitan Water District's part of the rebate is a region-wide program, SoCal Water$mart, and its fact sheet notes that your local water agency may offer an additional incentive. Check with the agency on your water bill before you plan around a number.

We create gorgeous 3D designs for your outdoor space

Watering: drip, zones and smart controllers

EPA WaterSense advises planting similar plants together in one irrigation zone, with each zone set for its sprinkler type, sun or shade and plants, so succulents are not watered like a lawn. For gardens, trees and shrubs it recommends microirrigation such as drip, which puts water slowly at the roots. Where spray heads stay, aim them at the planting, not the paving.

A weather-based controller sets the watering from local climate data to help prevent overwatering, and SoCal Water$mart lists rebates for irrigation controllers. In an LADWP turf rebate area, every sprinkler has to be capped, removed or converted to drip.

Patios, paths and pavers in the same plan

Decide where people walk, sit and park before choosing plants. A paver path between planting beds, a patio by the back door, steps, a wall, a barbecue or fire pit area: we draw them in the same 3D design as the garden. For the paving itself (the base, drainage, permeable pavers and upkeep), see our concrete pavers in Los Angeles page.

Decks, Pools, Stairs And Patios

Decks, pools, stairs and patios are another expertise of ours. Whether you are looking for a chic minimalistic design, something more elegant and traditional or a lusher and homier vibe, we can create the design to your taste and budget.

What sets the cost of landscaping in Los Angeles

Two yards of the same size can be very different jobs. These are the things that move the price, so you can compare estimates line by line:

  • What comes out

Removing lawn, roots, stumps or old concrete, and hauling it away.

  • Grading and drainage

Leveling, slopes, a rain capture feature, and keeping water from running toward the house (if the walls already show cracks, see foundation repair).

  • Plants and ground cover

How many plants, their container sizes, trees, and the mulch, rock or decomposed granite around them.

  • Irrigation

Converting sprinklers to drip, new valves and zones, and a smart controller.

  • Hard surfaces and structures

Patios and pavers, walls, steps, decks, fences and gates, and barbecue or fire pit areas.

  • Rebate and financing

The LADWP rebate is issued after the finished project is reviewed, not before the work. Ask about our financing partners for the rest.

How a landscaping project with us runs

  1. Call or send the form

Within 24-48 hours of your call, one of our team members will visit your home to scope out your space. The estimate is free.

  2. Design

One of our designers creates a 2D or 3D rendering of your yard, and you choose the plants, materials and details with them.

  3. Approval and permits

We never start construction until you approve of the design, and we apply for all the permits your home improvement project requires well before construction.

  4. Build

Our crews do the work. If you are claiming the LADWP rebate, your pre-approval has to be in place before any grass comes out.

Landscaping questions

Does artificial turf qualify for the LADWP turf rebate?

No. The LADWP checklist for the turf replacement rebate says "No artificial turf is installed", and the program fact sheet says artificial or synthetic turf is not allowed. If you want turf anywhere on a property you are claiming the rebate for, confirm with the program first.

How much is the LADWP turf rebate?

On LADWP's page in October 2026, residential customers could get $5 per square foot for 250 to 5,000 square feet of lawn, with a maximum of $25,000. It is not guaranteed: the program can change or end without notice, rebates are issued first come, first served, and you must get pre-approval before removing any grass.

Is decomposed granite good for a Los Angeles yard?

For paths and ground cover between plants, it fits a low-water yard: the rebate fact sheet names decomposed granite, with mulch, as a permeable hardscape the program permits, because it lets water flow through the surface and slowly filter into the ground.

When is the best time to plant in Los Angeles?

LADWP points to October through March, when cooler temperatures make outdoor work easier and help new plants grow healthy roots.

Do you do backyard and front yard remodeling?

Yes. We redo front and back yards: hedges and plants, succulents, artificial turf and planters, gates and fences, decks and patios, stairs and steps, walls and grass lawns, and barbecue and fire pit areas, designed in 3D before construction starts.
