Earthquake retrofits for older houses
California's Earthquake Brace + Bolt program provides up to $3,000 toward a code-compliant seismic retrofit to a qualifying house. It covers wood-framed, pre-1980 homes with a raised foundation. A house with cripple walls gets a brace and bolt retrofit: the cripple walls are braced with plywood or OSB sheathing and the foundation is bolted to the wood frame of the house; a house without cripple walls gets the bolting only.
The grant is a state program, not a Maingreen offer or price: homeowners register with the program while its registration is open, and whether a house qualifies depends on the house and its ZIP code. If foundation work is planned on an older raised-foundation house, check the program's site for the current rules.
